The shooting occurred just before 1 p.m. Thursday inside the Alameda County parole office on Edgewater Drive, police said. Police sources said the suspect, later identified as 48-year-old Brian Keith Hall, was a parolee. The parole officer was taken to Highland Hospital where he died.

California State Parole Agent Joshua Byrd, 40, was shot and killed in his Oakland office by a 48-year-old gunman who was apprehended by police as he tried to flee the scene.

The man who was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder was reportedly paroled in January after serving more than two years for a stabbing near the Lakeshore area.

A state parole agent was shot in East Oakland on Thursday, triggering a manhunt. The suspect fled on foot after the 12:48 p.m. incident on Edgewater Drive.
