ATLANTA — Rafael Devers was in the lineup at first base for the San Francisco Giants at Atlanta on Tuesday night, the slugger's first start at the position that he refused to play for his prior team, the Boston Red Sox.

The Rafael Devers at first base era will begin Tuesday night for the San Francisco Giants. Devers, who came over in a blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox in May, will make his first career start at first base against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park.

The issue in Boston began in February when the Red Sox signed third baseman Alex Bregman, pushing Devers to a designated hitter-only role. Devers publicly rebuked the organization for taking him away from third base, where he has struggled defensively throughout his career even as his bat has earned him three All-Star appearances.
